In my piece, Shifting Fire, I experiment with the use of a palindrome poem. A palindrome is a word, phrase, or any sequence that reads the same backward as forward. The words “madam” or “wow” are examples of palindromic words, as well as the letters found in the phrase “Live on time, emit no evil.”
I wanted the message within my poem to help portray the changeable nature of the emotions and perspectives we carry. Word by word, my poem embodies a perspective of empowerment when read forward and powerlessness when read backward. The word “lies” toggles the palindrome from forward to backward, shifting the narrative in the process.
